Female Pattern Hair Loss: The Cause and The Cure

female pattern hair loss

When you catch sight of your hair in the mirror, have you noticed that your parting is wider, or that your once thick and lustrous ponytail is looking noticeably thinner?

You could have Female Pattern Hair Loss, also known as Androgenetic Alopecia, the most common cause of hair loss in women. In most cases, this type of hair loss can occur in your 40s, 50s, or 60s, though for some women, it can begin much earlier.

How will I know if it’s Female Pattern Hair Loss?

It’s a progressive condition so you’ll keep losing hair, but you won’t lose all of your hair, like some men do if they are susceptible to Male Pattern Baldness. What you’ll notice is that your parting seems wider, or you may notice your hairline near your temples receding. Eventually this can become a more widespread thinning of the hair.

If you notice this happening, see your doctor, who may refer you to a specialist. There are other causes of hair loss which can affect the hair in a very similar way, so get a definite diagnosis, because getting that is your first step to getting the proper treatment for your particular type of hair loss.

What causes Female Pattern Hair Loss?

Female Pattern Hair Loss is hereditary, so it can’t be prevented, and it can come from either parent if they carry the gene.

Treatments for Female Pattern Hair Loss

Treatments can stop your hair loss from getting worse and help your hair start to grow again. Generally, the earlier you seek hair loss treatment, the better the results.

Hair loss can be very distressing, but the good news is, there are plenty of solutions that you can try.

Minoxidil

This is a commonly used treatment for male and female hair loss that is available as a lotion, liquid, or foam, and it has been proven to reduce hair loss and promote the growth of new hair. It takes around two months on average to take effect.

Other treatments which you may or may not be able to get on the NHS include:

  • Steroid injections
  • Steroid creams
  • Immunotherapy
  • Light treatment
  • Tattooing
  • Hair transplant
