Hair Loss After Chemotherapy: What Are My Options?

woman with long hair

Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are the most common treatments for cancer, but as well as giving you a fighting chance against a terrible disease, they also cause some undesirable side effects. One particularly distressing side effect, especially for women, is hair loss. For women, hair is closely linked to femininity, confidence, and self-esteem, and to lose it can be devastating.

But if you’ve just gone through chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment and you’re suffering from hair loss as a result, all is not lost. There are options. Hair extensions and wigs can help you disguise your hair loss until your natural hair grows back, and they can make you look and feel beautiful and confident again.

If you’re suffering from hair loss after chemotherapy, here are your options.

Why does chemotherapy and radiotherapy cause hair loss?

Chemotherapy and radiotherapy target the cancer cells in the body and they weaken and kill them. Unfortunately, they can also destroy healthy cells too, including those in the hair follicles, which can cause hair thinning and loss. It’s not just the hair on the head that’s affected; you might also lose your eyebrows, eyelashes, and hair from elsewhere on your body.

When does hair loss from chemotherapy or radiotherapy start?

This will depend on the particular treatment you’re on, but hair loss tends to happen in most people within 2-4 weeks of treatment. You might notice clumps of hair on your hairbrush or pillow, or more hair coming out than usual when you wash it.

When will my hair grow back after chemotherapy or radiotherapy?

Everyone is different, but generally when your hair starts to grow back, you’ll notice a soft fuzz on your scalp after a few weeks. Around 4 weeks post treatment, the hair will start growing at its  normal rate again. After 2 months, you can have around an inch of growth.

You may notice that when you hair grows back, the texture or even the colour of the hair is different. This is due to the effects of treatment and eventually, your hair should go back to how it was.

Are hair extensions an option after chemotherapy or radiotherapy?

Losing your hair can be very upsetting and it can really knock your confidence. It can take quite a while for your natural hair to grow back, but there are options if you don’t want to wait to have lovely locks again. You shouldn’t have hair extensions during your cancer treatment, but once your hair has grown at least 3 inches, it’s possible to have hair extensions fitted to add some length and volume.

What type of hair extensions are best after chemotherapy or radiotherapy?

My recommendation for the best hair extensions to get after chemotherapy or radiotherapy is tape-in hair extensions. The tape can be cut to size, is less visible than other types of bonds, and less damaging to natural hair than glue. The tape won’t weigh your natural hair down and put stress on it when it’s fragile either. I would suggest that you don’t go too long or heavy with your extensions too for this reason.

What about disguising hair loss while you’re waiting for your hair to grow or if your hair loss is permanent?

While you’re waiting for your hair to grow enough for extensions, you might consider investing in a good quality wig that will help you feel more feminine and confident. There are a huge range of options, styles, colours, and fitting methods available. If you’d like some guidance, book a consultation with me and I can help!

If your hair loss is patchy, you might consider something like a topper which can disguise hair loss around the crown and parting.

Rarely, aggressive chemotherapy can cause permanent hair loss, and this can be a very difficult thing to come to terms with. If your hair isn’t growing back, get in touch and I can help you find the hair loss solution you need to feel like yourself again.

My Top Tips for Buying a Wig Online

woman wearing a wig

It’s easier than ever to buy wigs online, and whether you want to wear one to disguise hair loss or to make a fashion statement, you’ll find a huge choice of wigs to suit every budget. It might be convenient to buy a wig online but there’s also the problem that you sometimes don’t know what you’re getting. Some people part with their hard-earned cash and end up with a poor quality wig; don’t let that be you. Here are my top tips for buying a wig online.

Do your research before you buy

You would do this before you buy any other item and your wig is no exception. There’s a huge choice of wigs online and they vary a lot in price, quality, type, style, and colour, so to avoid being completely confused, know what you want before you shop.

Think about what colour you want, your preferred length, style, and whether you want a lace front or a closure.

You’ll also need to think about how you want to secure your wig. You want to be able to make sure it doesn’t slip but you also want a method that fits in with your lifestyle and doesn’t damage your natural hair. Check out my previous blog on the best glue-free ways to secure your wig.

Check out what other customers are saying

You think you’ve found your perfect wig, but what are other customers saying? Read the reviews but also be aware that some companies do unfortunately put fake positive reviews up on their websites. For peace of mind before you buy, Google the company and see what people are saying about them elsewhere. You’ll soon get an idea of whether you can trust them before you hand over any money.

Don’t go on hair grade alone

Hair grades are supposed to give you an indication of the quality of the hair you’re buying, but sadly, not all companies are truthful about the quality of the hair they’re selling, so don’t let the grade be your only deciding factor when it comes to buying a wig online. Get clued up on the different grades of hair you can buy and what they mean in our blog post.

Ask questions

Before you buy it’s a good idea to have a chat with the seller or wig maker you can ask all the questions you need to. If they’re the real deal, they’ll have no problem telling you what you need to know. If something doesn’t feel right at this point, take your custom elsewhere.

Do you want to feel help and advice on finding your perfect wig online or elsewhere?

Rock Your Wig at Work

Woman wearing wig at work

If you wear a wig, you’ve probably struggled with finding one that’s suitable for work. Will it stay on? Will I be too hot all day? Will people ask questions or comment on it? But there’s no reason why you can’t wear a wig in the workplace and look and feel confident and amazing.

Here are my top tips on how to rock your wig at work.

What is the best wig to wear for work?

That depends. You have to consider things like the dress code and what your job involves day to day. For example, if you work in a professional office, you might not want to wear your statement ‘look at me’ fuchsia wig and if your job is active and makes you sweat, you won’t want to wear your heaviest human hair wig.

You also need to think about the type of wig you go for. For example a frontal wig looks the most natural, but they do take longer to fit so if you know you’re short of time in the morning, or you just want to spend a little longer in bed, maybe for a closure wig instead. They are a lot easier and quicker to fit.

What’s the best way to keep it secure during the day?

If you’re going to be wearing a wig for work, you don’t want to have to worry about it slipping, so you need a way to keep it secure that also protects your natural hair underneath. You might not want to use glue, so read our blog on the best alternative ways to keep your wig safe and secure at work.

Dealing with the inevitable questions

You’ve heard them all before, are you wearing a wig? What does it feel like? Does it feel really hot to wear? It’s inevitable that people are going to ask questions.

It’s up to you how you answer them really. People might just be curious, but you don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to as it’s a really personal thing.

If someone asks if you’re wearing a wig you can just say yes and leave it at that. You don’t need to go into the why if you don’t want to.

People wear wigs for all sorts of reasons from making a fashion statement to making them feel more confident when they’re recovering from an illness. Whatever it is, rock your wig, no matter where you are and don’t worry about what other people say or think. It’s your journey and your choice.

Why Don’t My Wigs Look Like The Ones I See On Instagram?

woman wearing a wig

The world of Instagram can seem dreamlike and flawless, and we’ve all fallen into the trap of comparing what we have with what we see in the posts of influencers and celebrities. Ladies, if you wear a wig, they are no exception.

You wanted your wig to make you look and feel confident, beautiful, and glamorous, but do you scroll through the gorgeous, perfectly-fitted wigs in every possible colour on Insta and feel a tinge of envy and disappointment?

Here’s why your wigs don’t look like the ones you see on Instagram.

You haven’t invested in good quality hair

Incase you didn’t know already, wigs are graded according to hair type and quality, and if you don’t invest in good quality hair, you can’t expect your wig to look like the ones you see on Instagram. Virgin hair (hair that is 100% human and has not been processed in any way) is the best quality hair you can buy, and this is reflected in the higher price tag. If your budget doesn’t stretch to this though, there are other good quality budget-friendly options. Check out our blog on hair grades to find out what type of hair will look Insta-worthy.

You aren’t using the best method to secure it

You can’t expect your wig to look its best if it keeps slipping or if there’s glue build-up on it. Think about your lifestyle first and try our different methods of securing your wig to see what looks and feels best for you. I wrote a post on the best glue-free methods of securing your wig a little while ago. Check it out for my top tips and advice.

Your lace isn’t a good match for your skin tone

For that flawless, Insta-ready look, choose a frontal with lace that matches your skin tone. It’s even possible to tint the lace to suit you for an exact match. If you haven’t got a clue which shade to get, my advice is to go with a lighter shade because you can always tint it darker.

Remember that practice makes perfect and all on Insta isn’t as it seems

It might help to remember that when you see images of perfectly fitted and styled wigs on Instagram, that the wearers won’t always have been skilled wig stylists or fitters. They would have had exactly the same struggles as you to begin with. My advice is practice styling and fitting your wig, watch online tutorials, and remember, I’m always here if you need advice.

And one last thing, you know that plenty of people who post on Instagram have a lot of tricks up their sleeves to make their pictures look perfectly polished, so it might be that the exact colour and shine of a wig is down to the tactical use of a filter. All might not be as it seems, so don’t get too down on how your wig looks!

Would you like to find out how to make your wig look just as good as the ones you see on Instagram?

At Salon La Reine, we specialise in hair loss solutions like wigs, toppers, and hair systems, that can help you disguise any hair thinning or loss while your natural hair grows back.

I’m here to give you the best advice on wearing a wig, fitting it perfectly, and styling it to make you look super glam.

How to Wear a Wig in the Summer and Stay Cool

woman in summer heat

British summer weather can be changeable to say the least, but whether its dry and sunny or we’re having downpours, things can get pretty hot and humid. This makes wearing a wig in the height of summer a definite challenge. On the plus side, wigs won’t lose their style as easily as natural hair when the temperature rises, but wearing one when it’s hot can feel unbearable.

So what do you do, just not wear one?

Well if you’re suffering from hair loss, wearing a wig might be one of the things that makes you feel confident again. You don’t have to give up wearing your precious wig in the summer, just follow my tips on how to wear a wig in the summer and stay cool.

Switch to a synthetic wig when the temperature rises

Human hair wigs might look beautiful and natural, but they are much heavier than synthetic wigs, and this isn’t what you want in the summer. Synthetic wigs can be up to three times lighter than human wigs, so have a few on hand to switch to in the summer heat.

Ditch the styling tools

Using hairdryers, straighteners, and curling wands in hot weather will not only make you overheat, it will really dry out your wig, whether it’s made from synthetic or human hair. Wigs don’t have the benefit of being replenished by our scalp’s natural oils and so they can easily dry out with repeated styling over time.

Invest in an anti-humidity spray for your wig

This will stop your wig going frizzy and drying out in the heat. It will also keep your wig smelling nice and fresh.

Keep your wig off the back of your neck with an updo

When the temperature rises and things get sweaty, get your hair off your neck by styling your wig  in a side braid or a bun.

Avoid touching your wig all the time

Your wig might make you feel gorgeous and confident, but if you keep playing with it, you’ll deposit the oils and sweat from your hands into your wig and it can end up looking greasy and weighed down.

Buy a no-sweat wig liner

These magical wig accessories are ventilated and allow air to circulate under your wig. Not only that, they stop sweat getting in to your wig cap.

Switch up your wig colour

Dark colours absorb more heat. Ever wondered why it always feels stifling hot when you wear your gorgeous black wig? That’s why. Try switching your wig colour to a slightly lighter shade, it can make all the difference.

Wash your wig

Oils, sweat, and products can build up in your wig in the summer, just as they do in natural hair. Make sure you wash it regularly to make sure it doesn’t get any more sweaty and heavy than it needs to.

Can You Have Sex With Your Wig On?

couple kissing romantically

Do a quick Google search of this question and you’ll find some horror stories about wigs coming off when people were in the middle of a passionate moment.

But wearing a wig shouldn’t stop you being intimate with someone.

Okay, there are issues to think about, including whether or not you’re going to mention to someone that you wear a wig (especially if it’s a new partner) and what you would do if your wig was to slip or even, shock horror, come off during sex.

But sex is a natural part of life, and if you are suffering from hair loss, whatever the cause, your wig is something that makes you feel beautiful and confident again. Wigs and sex can mix, you’ve just got to know how to make your wig as secure as possible so it won’t budge when you’re in the throes of passion!

How to sex-proof your wig

Okay ladies, I know that securing your wig properly is an everyday concern, but it’s even more important that it stays firmly in place during sex when you’ll be feeling more vulnerable than usual. Here are the best methods of securing your wig during sex. I recommend you try a few different options and see what makes you feel the most comfortable and confident.

Wig Tape

Tape is one of the most effective methods of securing a wig. You’ll find that it comes in different forms, like a roll, pre-cut strips, and tabs. Try each and see which one you like the most. The downside of tape is that because the wig is so secure to your head, you might get a little hot when you’re getting frisky.

Wig Glue

This will also make your wig feel extra secure, but be wary of using glue if you have sensitive skin as it can cause irritation. Not only that, if you’re using a wig as a protective style to shield your natural hair from damage and help it grow, glue can actually clog the hair follicles and prevent healthy hair growth, which is the last thing you want. And just like tape, glue makes your wig so secure that it can get a little hot under there!

If you want to know what the best glue-free options are to secure your wig, read our blog.

Wig Grips

Wig grips are popular and can be used whether you have natural hair or not. They are also gentle on natural hair, so they’re a perfect choice if you are trying to grow your hair back and avoid damage.  There’s a downside though, if the adjustable strap on the grip loosens or breaks, your wig can slide or fall off. Not what you want during an intimate moment!

I’d recommend keeping an extra grip in your bedside drawer or bathroom just in case.

Wig Caps

Wig caps are also a good option whether you have natural hair or not. You’ll find that there are a few different types of cap:

  • Nylon Wig Caps- If you have short hair or no hair, these are your best option.
  • Mesh Wig Caps- These are best if you have longer hair as they can flatten and hold natural hair.
  • Wig Grip Caps- These are the best choice if you want your wig to be secure but you have sensitive skin.

Be aware that wig caps do stretch out over time so they’ll need replacing, or you risk your wig slipping off at inopportune moments (yes, I mean in the bedroom!). They can also make you feel warm, and if they aren’t cleaned properly, sweat and oil build-up means that they can start to smell. Not the best aphrodisiac!

Wig Clips

If you have natural and you’re handy with a needle and thread, wig clips might be just what you need to sex-proof your wig. The best thing about wig clips is that once they are sewn in to the wig, they will never need to be replaced.

With a bit of planning and trial and error, you can try and test these methods and see which one works best for you.

What Are Hair Grades and What Do They Mean?

woman with long beautiful hair

When you’re looking for wigs, hair pieces, or hair extensions, you’ll see information about ‘hair grade.’ With so many different kinds of wigs, hair loss solutions, and extensions on the market, a hair grading system was put in place so that in theory, you can tell whether the hair is good quality or not.

The hair grading system has made choosing wigs, extensions, and hair pieces simpler, but because the system isn’t regulated, sometimes you just don’t know what you’re getting and this can be frustrating and confusing.

In this blog, I want to tell you all about what hair grades are and what else to look out for before you part with your hard-earned cash.

What are hair grades?

When it comes to hair grades, you can get hair that’s rated 3A, 4A, 5A, 6A, 7A, 8A, 9A, or 10A. So what does this mean? Well it tells you the qualities you should be able to expect from each grade of hair.

Grade 3A

This is usually cheap, thin, low-quality hair which sometimes has synthetic hair added to it. It’s chemically processed and you might be able to smell this. This type of hair will usually shed and tangle easily.

Grade 4A and 5A

This hair is also quite thin and easy to tangle if it’s not taken care of. It’s usually low to medium quality, and often used in hairstylist training.

Grade 6A

This is reasonable quality medium thick hair and is suitable for anyone on a budget. It’s usually Remy hair which means the cuticles go in the same direction so it’s less likely to tangle.

Grade 7A

This is high-quality thick Remy hair that won’t shed or tangle as much. It’s still a great budget-friendly option for ladies who want to feel gorgeous again.

Grade 8A and 9A

This is 100% human virgin hair. Virgin hair means that the hair has not been processed in any way. This hair won’t tangle as much as other types and you’ll find it’s easier to maintain. You’ll notice that the higher quality is reflected in a higher price tag.

Grade 10A

This is the best quality hair that you can buy and it’s also the most expensive. It’s 100 thick, strong virgin hair and if it’s looked after properly, it will last you a long time.

What else should I look out for?

When you’re buying a wig, hair extensions, or a hair piece, don’t make decisions based on hair grade alone, as unfortunately, some companies aren’t 100 truthful. It’s a good idea to also look at:

Whether the hair is Remy or Non-Remy

With Remy hair, the cuticles are all intact and facing in the same direction, which results in hair that tangles and sheds a lot less than non-Remy hair. It’s also 100% human hair which has been processed, but will last you a long time if you look after it.

Hair type

100% human hair is likely to be of higher quality but it tends not to last as long as 100% virgin or Remy hair.

If you see any mention of chemical treatment or processing on hair that’s advertised as 100% virgin hair, don’t buy it, because virgin hair is never processed. 100% virgin hair is the best quality hair you can buy, and usually this is reflected in a much higher price.

Synthetic hair is lower quality hair that won’t last for very long.

But beware…

The hair grading system is not formally regulated which means that companies can sell wigs, extensions, and hair pieces and claim that they are higher grade than they actually are. When you buy online this is even more of a problem because you can’t see the hair for yourself before you buy it.

Why are Wigs So Popular All of a Sudden?

woman wearing wig

Hair is, for most of us, our crowning glory. It defines femininity and a good hair day really boosts our self-esteem. But sadly, this is why wearing a wig has often had a stigma attached to it.

People suffering from hair loss can feel self-conscious about wearing a wig, but the good news is, wigs are becoming increasingly popular. They are no longer just an option for people who have hair loss or who are recovering from an illness. Lots of people are jumping on the bandwagon.

So why are wigs so popular all of a sudden?

The rise of the influencer

Head over to Instagram and you’ll see some gorgeous wigs on influencers and celebs right, left, and centre. They rave about their wigs and where they got them, and this makes them more attractive to a wider audience. They are no longer just a fancy dress option at Halloween, they’re an everyday accessory and fashion statement.

There are so many choices available

As wigs become more of a fashion accessory, there’s no reason why you can’t have a wig to match your favourite outfit and your personal style. There are so many different types and styles of wig available now and you can try new hairstyles and hair textures without the hassle or commitment.

It’s easy to find your perfect wig

Depending on what you want, it’s really easy to find your perfect wig, from cheaper synthetic options via wholesalers or online retailers to 100% custom-fit wigs that will make you look amazing.

Not only that, wigs are perfect for busy lives. No more wrestling with hair that won’t behave every day, just put on your wig and go. When you get one, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it!

You can disguise hair thinning or loss

Many women who are suffering from hair thinning or loss opt to wear a wig to disguise it until their natural hair grows back. Wigs are a great option, but you must remember that wearing a wig is not an excuse to forget about looking after your natural hair.

Wigs protect your natural hair

Wearing a wig can give your natural hair a much-needed break from heat styling or chemicals, especially if you are trying to regrow it. Sometimes your hair just needs a break and a wig is a great solution.

Check out our last blog on how to wear a wig as a protective style for more on how a wig can protect your natural hair.

At Salon La Reine, we specialise in hair loss solutions like wigs, toppers, and hair systems, that can help you disguise any hair thinning or loss while your natural hair grows back.

We know that hair loss can be very distressing and we want to help you feel confident and beautiful again.

Protective Styling: Why Wearing a Wig Can Protect Your Natural Hair

wig hair loss protective styling

Frequent washing, styling, and detangling your hair puts a lot of stress on it, especially if you are suffering from hair loss.

If you are dealing with hair loss, you’ll want to protect your natural hair as much as you can, and this is where protective styling comes in. Here’s why wearing a wig can protect your natural hair.

What is protective styling?

Protective styling is when you wear your hair so that the ends are tucked away. The ends of your hair are usually the most damaged and fragile part.

There are plenty of ways to protect your natural hair like wearing it in styles like gentle braids or a loose bun, but sometimes your hair just needs a complete break, which is where wigs can help.

Wearing a wig as a protective style: Things to remember

Remember that wearing a wig is not an excuse to neglect your natural hair

When you’re suffering from hair loss, the goal should always be to encourage healthy, strong natural hair regrowth. Don’t neglect your natural hair and put a wig on to disguise it. Maintain a good hair care regime (including regular conditioning treatments) and use gentle hair and scalp nourishing products.

Don’t opt for glue

If you really want to protect your natural hair, glue might not be the best option for securing your wig. Glue can block the pores of the scalp and damage the hair follicles which can result in further hair thinning and can even stop it growing.

Tape, wig combs or clips, and elastic are all gentler options that will keep your wig just as secure. For more tips on how to wear your wigs without glue, check out our blog.

The benefits of wearing a wig as a protective style

They’re convenient

No more waking up every day worrying about how you’re going to style your natural hair to disguise hair loss, just put on your favourite wig and go.

They’re versatile

With wigs, you can change your hairstyle and colour depending on your mood. You can be a little more neat and casual at the office, but go super glam on a night out with the girls.

You don’t have to use damaging heat on your hair

Wigs are a great alternative to trying to wrestle your natural hair into some sort of style with straighteners or curling wands. Wigs allow you to have a straight or curly style without the damage.

They are economical

A good quality wig is an investment, and they don’t come cheap. If you buy a good quality human hair wig, look after it, and store it properly, it will last you a long time and is considerably cheaper per wear than all of the hair loss products and disguises that might not work for you.
