Pre-bonded hair extensions are attached to the natural hair using keratin, a protein that your own hair is made of. Keratin tends to be gentler on the hair than many of the other silicon-based glues that are used with extensions. Silicon glue can be tough to remove and can cause damage to your natural hair.
How are pre-bonded hair extensions fitted?
Pre-bonded extensions are fitted strand by strand, and they’re applied using a heat connector which melts the keratin resin and fuses the extension to your natural hair at the root. The bond is rolled to secure the extension instantly.
What are the advantages of having pre-bonded hair extensions?
- They look natural and the bonds are virtually undetectable.
- Pre-bonded extensions tend to be more secure and are less likely to slip compared to other types of extensions. This makes them a great choice if you have a busy active life.
- Pre-bonded extensions are great for fine or compromised hair that might not be strong enough to bear the weight of Micro Rings or other fitting methods.
- They can feel more comfortable than other types of extensions, you might even forget you have extensions because they’ll blend in with your natural hair so well.
Are there any downsides?
They are natural-looking, low-maintenance, and comfortable, but remember with this method that heat is used to fuse the extensions and natural hair so there’s some potential for damage; something to think about if your hair is already compromised.
How to maintain pre-bonded extensions
I always recommend regular maintenance with extensions. Every 6-8 weeks you should be making an appointment so I can check that your extensions aren’t tangled or matted. I will remove any loose extensions and reapply any new ones that are needed as your hair grows out.
As well as maintenance, I give every client aftercare tips and recommend products to use with your extensions. This is usually the difference between hair that looks amazing for longer and extensions that look dry, matted, and frazzled after a few weeks.
Always have your extensions fitted by a qualified and experienced extensionist, I can’t say this enough. Applying extensions takes a lot of knowledge and skill, and you risk causing lasting damage to your hair if you go to somebody that’s just offering them cheap. Just like most things in life, you get what you pay for!
